Windmill Aeration Has an Impact on Quality of Pond Drinking Water and Cattle Production.

Field Trials Conducted at the Agricultur and Agri-Food Canada Range Substation, near Stavely, Alberta show how the source of drinking water has a major effect on animal performance. The trials compared fresh water delivered to a trough and water straight from a dugout (pond). Over a 33 day period, cows drinking water from the dugout lost .2 Kg while calves gained 26.3 kg. Cows drinking from the trough gained 7.4 kg and the calves gained 33.9 kg.

In a similar study using steers, it was found that over 71 days steers drinking fresh water gained 1.21 kg a day while those drinking water direct from a pond/dugout gained .93 kg a day. That represents a 23 % reduction in weight gain when only pond/dugout water is provided.
