Frequently Asked Questions
1) What windmill do I need?
The Superior Jet Stream windmill (single diaphragm pump) will sufficiently aerate most ponds of one acre or less. The Superior Turbo Jet Stream windmill (double diaphragm pump) is recommended for larger ponds. However, if your small pond is long and narrow, oddly shaped or has a large island, you may benefit by choosing the Turbo Jet Stream. Many variables such as nutrient load will effect which windmill is right for your particular application. We suggest you call us with your specific situation so we can recommend the best package for optimum results.
2) What about tower size?
In wide open areas the 12 foot tower may be sufficient to enable the windmill to "catch" optimum winds. In areas not as open the 16 foot and 20 foot towers are recommended. Ideally, the 20 foot tower offers the best performance in most areas because there is a 20% to 25% increase in wind speed from the 12 foot to the 20 foot tower height.
3) Are Superior Windmills and towers strong?
All Superior Windmills are constructed from high grade galvanized steel with up to .8 mm gauge strength. Superior's strong 3 legged tower design manufactured from quality galvanized steel ensures long life and durability.
4) What about maintenance?
Superior Windmills are engineered to provide long life with minimum maintenance required. Sealed shaft bearings are used for longevity. Superior's molded rubber pump diaphragms can last up to 5 years depending on average wind speeds. When replacement is required the diaphragm is designed for easy access.
The pivot shaft should be greased only once a year under normal conditions.
5) How long does it take to assemble a Superior Windmill?
On average, two people can completely assemble a Superior Windmill in about eight hours. Easy to follow instructions are included with every purchase.
6) What about high winds?
Superior Windmills are engineered to gauge themselves in high wind conditions by their extra large tail design. If the wind is extremely strong the fan will point away from the wind therefore eliminating damage to the pump.
7) Where is the best place to install the air diffuser?
The best place to put the diffuser is in the deepest part of the pond. The more water the bubbles pass through on the way to the surface the better. This also keeps the deeper water oxygenated thereby reducing pond muck and anaerobic bacteria.
8) Can I also pump water with Superior Windmills?
Absolutely. Pumps are available for deep water such as wells, and shallow water applications such as ponds and streams. You can even aerate and pump water at the same time using the Superior Windmill Turbo Jet Stream model.
9) Can I use a Superior Windmill in winter?
Yes. For cold climates Superior Windmill has developed the Freeze Tank. This option enables the windmill to continue aerating your pond all winter long in freezing conditions. Winter is actually one of the best times to aerate: letting the pond catch up from summer heat and nutrient overload conditions. The Freeze Tank lets you take advantage of this peak aeration season while also eliminating winter fish kill and keeping an area of water open which is beneficial to wildlife.
10) How long will it take my Superior Windmill to arrive from the time I order?
You will receive your order in 7 to 10 business days under normal conditions.
